    Valve clearance

    Hi,

    I've just done the valve clearance on my GSX400E twin. Its got the 8V head with screw/locknut adjusters. I followed the manual to the dot, and set all the clearances mid way, so if I remeber correctly I set them all at .05mm. Anyway I checked each valve four times over, and the engine starts and runs very well; until it heats up. I might be exagerrating things, being used to riding two strokes and all, but it seems to be a little noisy to me. At ambient temperatures of about 25-30 celcius, and filtering at 30 through traffic for about 20 miles, the intake tappets start to click noticeably. Is this acceptable, normal? On cooler days and without traffic the clicking is much less pronounced.

    All I really need to know is how much clicking is 'normal' or 'allowed'. I know all the clearances are good as I checked and checked again.

      It's so hard to tell without listening to it. I really didn't notice or listen to my top end until after doing the valve clearances. Then I really noticed it. It's not loud, just noticeable.

      What oil are you using? Try Amsoil 20w 50 or Rotella 15w 40.

          I'm using 10W 40, as is suggested in the manual, and stamped on the dipstick cover, should be fine.

          Driving to work this morning, very cold air, there was harldy any clatter. So i guess I will just have to get used to this as a GS thing

              You don't want it too quiet which usually indicated improper clearance. Some noise is normal. Better to set the clearances on the loose side than too tight. It is also common for the bike to make more noise immediately following a valve adjustment. Valves which are too tight (and they get tighter with wear/miles) make less noise. So don't get worried that your bike sounds like a sewing machine now that the valves are back in spec.

                  Sewing maching, thats just what it sounds like! Great, thanks for the reassurance. And yes, when I bought it is was running with no noise. So the valve check was a good idea, all but one valve was tight. Right, off for some carefree miles then
