Carb cleaning project, first time!

I'm going to attempt to clean the carbs on my 1983 GS450T. This is the first time I've ever attempted to work on a bike, really anything mechanical. I'm naturally good with my hands though, and I have a mechanic giving me advice, etc. He's worked on old bike before, but it's been a while.

I've got the tank off, and the seat. now I believe I have ot take off the airbox. But, I'm not sure how to get it out. I see where it bolts on, but I don't know how to get the box out of the frame. Do I need to remove the electrical panel on the left side? Drop the battery? That's the only way I see to get the airbox out.

anything else I need to check on while I'm in here?

You really shouldnt have to remove the air box. On my 81 gs450l i just slide the airbox back and hold it back with a crowbar till i get the carbs out. Not a fun task but better than trying to remove the airbox completly. While you got the carbs out might as well check your valve clearances.

Okay, that's kinda what I was considering also, but I wasn't sure If I'd be able to get it back far enough. I'll try that though, it'll be easier..

Yeah you just got to keep some pressure on the crowbar to hold it back. I just use my shoulder for that while i remove the carbs. Its not to bad once you have done it like 30 times like i have lol.

Keep all your parts organized and your workbench clean. A parts diagram or camera is helpful if you can't remember how to put something back together.
