Mystery substance on my tank paint

When I came out of work today there was some mystery substance on my tank, like four spots of it. I went to wipe it off and I think it had dissolved my clear coat and softened the paint.
I know it wasn't there when I went in to the building and it looks like splash or spray, I am thinking it is brake fluid.
I checked my bike and it wasn't from my bike.
I want to know how screwed I am, will the paint ever harden up again?

Did you refuel the bike recently?? Perhaps it's gas ??

Sorry to hear it's messed up your paint...

          Bird crap?
I have no idea if softened paint can be salvaged. Maybe one of those car paint chip/detailing shops could give you some direction.

I have no idea of what that was on your tank. Sounds like its a respray if the substance is still keeping your paint soft on the tank.

Have you asked a paint specialist?

i was taking off my handle bars today and the front brake master reservoir leaked a little dribble on to my 3 day fresh prime paint job on my gas tank. it immediately discolored the primer and goo'ed it up a small amount until i got it wiped down. It could well be brake fluid.

you could try buffing it out or if it comes down to it a new clear coat might be in order.
