Sounds like valve train noise, or cam chain. I'd pull the valve cover off and check everything up top. When was the last time the valves have been adjusted? To check the tensioner it's best to pull it off - not easy with the carbs installed. Put the engine at 1-4 TDC first and mark the cam chain and sprockets with a marker or paint mark so you can see if the cam chain jumps a tooth.

Not sure what year petcocks where vacuum, mine sounded similar when it acted up.......Put your ear against the gas tank when its doing the knocking, If it sounds like a machine gun in there Its your Petcock being crazy......Worth a shot.....(solved my knocking issue).....Again Im not sure which years this would apply to mine was a 1980........good luck

Do a search for "cam end float".
