How hot is too hot for coils?

Yo.

Got my Bandit 600 coils installed. Got the Dyna S installed. Noticed while I was adjusting the timing on the Dyna that both coils are frikkin' hot. Not quite skin-sizzlin' hot, but definitely hot enough that you wouldn't want to hold yer fingers on it too long.

Is this normal?

There's no markings on the coils to tell me which terminal gets the o/w wire and which gets the b (or w) wire, if I got them crossed, would that cause heat buildup in the coils?

Trying to find out so that I don't blow anything up while I'm syncing my carbs.

measure the resistance to make sure they are 3 ohm coils.

They will get hot from the engine, but no need to have them cook themselves from inside out as well. If they are not marketed then probably doesnt matter what the polarity is.

I measure 3.2ohms between the terminals on both coils.

3.2 ohms sounds fine. Not much else you can do given the coils; either relocate them to someplace not as hot or live with it.

You could turn it into a science experiment but the bottom line seems to be they like to run at the temperature you are experiencing.

130 F is uncomfortable to the touch. normal and fine.


250 F and the plastic begins to melt -bad.



machines do operate above human temperatures.
