Petcock Identification Needed...

Hi All!!

I received the "new" tank today for my 79' GS1000, and I was in the process of swapping everything over from my old tank, and low and behold..the petcock mounting holes are spaced differently. The holes on the new tank are closer together, so I'm kinda baffled as to what petcock I need?? Everything else fits perfectly...The pic below is of my old tank on the right and my new one on the left..

Any Ideas what petcock I need to get? I'm just down the road from Z1, so I can swing over and pick one up if I know what I need.

get a measurement and go from there! A guy en ebay sells new petcocks, and will tell you what the hole spacing is.As long as the outlet is on the correct side, you'll be good to go

More importantly, WHAT did your OLD one look like??? Was it the dreaded "80" petcock that didnt have a lever on it, instead had that god awfull screwdriver thingy??? If so, thank your lucky stars that the other DIDNT...from what ive read, only that goofy petcock had that oddball measurement. A couple of the people that ive run into personally that have/had them say they cant find a BOLT ON replacement for that stupid thing short of a Pingel....Gahh...

More importantly, WHAT did your OLD one look like??? Was it the dreaded "80" petcock that didnt have a lever on it, instead had that god awfull screwdriver thingy??? If so, thank your lucky stars that the other DIDNT...from what ive read, only that goofy petcock had that oddball measurement. A couple of the people that ive run into personally that have/had them say they cant find a BOLT ON replacement for that stupid thing short of a Pingel....Gahh...

I wanted the manual pingel and I love it...easy to measure with a ruler, I had one of those things and god I hated it ... and wth looks like you might need to talk with the guys at pingel the phone people are pretty sharp..that is baffling to say the least; sure there is an adapter plate you can get but I didn't see anything different between the tanks so not sure why the location would be like that tho

Those are 1980 tanks. The petcocks are available. As far as I can tell, the screwdriver thing is just for prime, they don't have the double feed for a reserve tank and are vacuum only. they work fine on the '78 and '79 models. I have K&N's on mine. I don't think the petcock would get in the way of the air box.

That's bizarre!! I've never heard of such a thing. However, the bolt spread is really all that's very important because you can always enlarge the hole for the standpipe....that has nothing to do with the way it seals, anyway, as long as you stay within the boundaries of the sealing surface (which you can easily do since it's a side-to-side difference).

I'm very curious to know what petcock was originally on that tank.

Those are 1980 tanks. The petcocks are available. As far as I can tell, the screwdriver thing is just for prime, they don't have the double feed for a reserve tank and are vacuum only. they work fine on the '78 and '79 models. I have K&N's on mine. I don't think the petcock would get in the way of the air box.

It doesn't get in the way on a pingel... mine clears my airbox with no issue, I did not go for shortening my stand pipe though. As my gas gauge is far from accurate I like the 1 gallon reminder of it stock.

Unfortunately, the bolt spread is not the same, it's shorter.

How nice to be remembered!! I wrote a lot about the procedure when I did it....but that was more than 7 years ago. (I know I've referred to it a number of times since then, when it came up on the forum).

Incidentally, shortening the stand pipe in order to gain the desired 'reserve' is dependent upon the configuration of the gas tank...so it's different for different models.

Sure!..I'm not great with measurements, but the old one(the petcock that I have) has 2" spacing on center, and the new tank has 1-3/4" spacing..so they are definitely different. Heres a pic of my old petcock..it looks to have a screwdriver style notch to position the internals?

It looks like my new tank is different...and not the dreaded "80"... (check out my pic on my other response)...so what do I use on my new tank then? My bike is a 79, and supposedly both tanks are from a 79, but that doesn't mean much!

CALL Jeff or Rob at Z1Enterprises...dont go off the list o petcocks off the site..they're sometimes not accurate in their years and whatnot..But THOSE guys KNOW their stuff, and can get you set up with a VACCUM petcock (please, dont use a pingel, if you're forgetfull like most of us, you might end up with a crankcase full of gas at some point) to fit the tank just perfect. $40-50 bucks and you wont have to fret about it for another 20 years..

Thanks TCK! I just e-mailed Jeff over at Z1..I think their 44mm vacuum model will fit as that just about 1-3/4" spacing versus their 50mm model which is almost 2". Thankfully Z1 is like 10 minutes from my house, and Ive picked up parts there before...excellent place to deal with..thay bent over back wards to accommodate me! I can bring my tank along, and Jeff can have a look at it to make sure.

I'm perfectly happy using a vacuum style versus the pingle..athough they are nice! I've been known to forget to turn my gas off in the past..ugh
