cluster question

I have bought a digital cluster for my GS and have a question.
Do I need to short one of the connectors that plugged into the cluster?

I have lights, brake lights, turn signals but when I press the start button it won't turn over!
I cleaned the start button switch, but it looked fine. The lights don't dim when I press the start button either.
I have a 80' gs1100E

It turned out that the connector (that goes to the starter button) by the top of the motor had become oxidized. After cleaning it, the bike fired right up.

Clusters are getting few and far between.
