Aftermarket exhaust won't fit...
So I bought a MAC exhaust from a GSR member, the headers line up and go into place. The issue I'm having is that the exhaust flanges won't go up against the motor, by about a half inch! I wish I had pictures but the pipe ends seem too long for the exhaust ports. Why is this? Am I supposed to use new bolts and let the flanges bolt on from that distance?

You could use longer bolts and pick up some kind of spacers from Home Depot or that type store. Maybe not ideal but probably okay.1983 GS 1100 Guided Laser

I find working on my motorcycle mildly therapeutic when I'm not cursing. -
contact the GSR member you bought it from and ask him how he managed to fit it. you may be making a silly mistake or he may have taken you for a ride by selling you the wrong pipe1978 GS1085.
Just remember, an opinion without 3.14 is just an onion!Comment

I think this is normal for aftermarket pipes. Here is a pic of what my Vance & Hines looks like on the GS. My last Honda had bassani pipes that were the same way. You probably just need longer bolts that would normally come with the exhaust but since it's used they may not have been included. So I bought a MAC exhaust from a GSR member, the headers line up and go into place. Okay, this is what it about looks like. I trust the member I bought it from, no way he took me for a ride. Thanks a lot Arkmage, this really helps!
