I'll hazard a guess; you are lean.

My street bike is running 147.5's and gets 35 mpg

WAYYYYYYYYYYYY lean...If you're running 38's, youre drawing more air, couple that with V-stacks, you need more fuel, bigger jets. I'd venture to guess up in the 150 range...

          Yup. You dragging a GS300L or a bored-out 1150?

Sorry, but we don't remember, and you didn't say.

A shame to burn all that up with improper jetting, eh Chef?

I have three more blocks two more heads three welded cranks ect ect. anyways I talked to a big tune up guy and he told me to go to 150's and get 110 octane with lead to get a proper plug reading or weld a bung in the exhaust for a o2 censer and get a small OBD-2 to dial it right it in. We looked through a scope or a loop and there was no aluminum in the plug so no damage done yet . it ran great last friday until it dropped in to 40s then boy was it lean the track was real slick
spinning well into second gear with a 1.48 sixty foot and still ran 6.70 at 102mph in the 1/8

I sorta feel your pain. And your bike doesn't even have to be a drag bike to have those problems.

This is my son's '81 850 (totally stock) right after we got it:

                    145 to 155

I swapped jets from 145 to 155 the pipes were not red and a ton more power
until I smoked my second clutch this summer I got a lockup from Paul Gast
but I need a spacer plate for a gs1000 I have to go and have one made we will see what a new clutch will do
