When accelerating hard and hitting 6-7k revs and above I can see that the gearindicator will dim to the point where it is almost off. If I let off the gas it will return. I suspect that the other lights does the same, but as I mostly drive in daylight I havent't yet noticed. This is most predominant in 4th and 5th gear. I realize it is something electrical, but where would I start to locate the problem?

You will need to know the output levels for the alternator and for the regulator\rectifier get them form a manual and use a meter to test.
Basscliffs website may have a manual for your bike. -
Get a multimeter and test using The Stator Papers.
And post up some pictures of your bike.........I love those 650 Kats !!

go over your grounds, especialy the one for the regulator.
generaly that is a clue to a impending R&R failure. mine started doing that on the 1000G , the voltage would actualy spike around 5K and the regulator would suddenly respond and yank voltage back down around 6k'ish. it did that for about a month before it stop adjusting and I had a charging system that would charge good at a set rpm, below that discharge, over that over charge.
my 1100e started doing it also and a R&R swap fixed it.Comment

on my 1000G all the terminals had already been changed to gold plated copper, it was the original factory R&R and had well over 100K miles on it.
it died from old age.
on the 1100E it came with a electrojunk regulator when I got it and the connections were all non stock and good.
shindengen SH232 is the only way to go.Comment

I will begin with cleaning all the terminals when I do my winter makeover. The PO actually had the stator rewinded (rewound?) by a professional with a very good reputation here in Denmark. At the same time it got a different than stock R/R which should be of higher quality.
Hopefully the terminal cleaning will help, God knows they need it
