work on front forks???

gentleman i have a 1980 gs1000E,,, now that i,m looking at modifying the springs or changing them to progression springs ,,,once i,ve removed the cap and the air valve,,, and also drained the dirty oil,,, which i checked out,,, is it easy for 1 person to put back the cap on his lonesome ,, hope you can help me ..... regards david from kaniva australia

I had no problem doing it myself, but im a big guy. The hardest part is not cross threading the thing while putting it back on.

Use a socket, extension and breaker bar or ratchet, you can push down hard enough with one hand, turn with the other.
The hard part is not crossthreading, it is very fine thread. Usually you would start the threads by hand to prevent this, it can't be done that way here, you need to push down too hard. The last time I used a speedwrench, it was easy to keep things straight.

It's not hard on the GS1000E. The Progressive (PS-1106) springs with the dimpled washer from the factory springs on top is just a bit below the top of the fork. It takes a bit of pressure, and do be careful threading it, but it goes on fairly easily by hand with no other tools. I'm 62 and not a big guy.
