    Timing Help

    Hello everyone. Right now I'm trying to adjust the timing on my 81 550T (non-points ignition). I've got the light set up correctly but the timing marks aren't even close. I would say half an inch off of what they are supposed to be. How do I adjust for this big of an error?

    Is it a digital timing light with different advance settings?
    If not maybe your cam timing is off.

      How are you checking the timing? If using a light you need to run the engine at something like 2500 rpm and look for alignment of the mark to the right of the F

        The engine has to be above the rpm that overcomes the advance weight springs like Ed said above. Ray.

          Right now the engine won't start. Would the timing play a role in the bike not starting?

            The ignition timing is keyed to the crank so it's not likely to be off enough to matter. The cams on the other hand could be off if they were not indexed properly to the crank.
