Disconnecting fuel send unit cable

I'm trying to troubleshoot my non-working fuel gauge, and I'm stomped by a most basic thing - how do I disconnect the send unit wires from main harness? There are vinyl sleeves covering plugs, and I am not able to move them aside so I can get access to copper connectors covered by it. I'm reluctant to pull on it too much since wires seem very flimsy. How do you disconnect this without breaking anything?

get some blunt needle nose pliers and reach inside the clear tubing to grab the connector. Do the reverse when reinstalling. The female side is a little hocky and often needs to be rebent to retain the male bullets.

There are bullet terminals inside the clear plastic protectors. Try using a pair of needle nose pliers, snaked under the cover for the male bullet, if you are concern about pulling the terminal ends off the wires.

Wow, thanks for quick responses! Especially for using the word "bullet", because I had a hard time visualizing what connectors looked like inside, but googling for "bullet connectors" makes it clear.

Thanks for the link. I'm going to first establish if problem is perhaps wiring or gauge, before I focus on the send unit, given the hassle of draining and removing the tank. I am going to follow troubleshooting procedure starting on section 12, page 23 of GS850 manual from BikeCliff's site.

PS... Turns out needle swings to full when I short connectors, and resistance is infinite on tank side of the wire. So I know now where to look next. Thanks again!

I was so sure that I was going to fix this unit, assuming that infinite resistance must mean that I had to bend the tab as described in the post linked above. Alas, this is what I found when I removed the cover.

Hmmmm...those wires are shorter than i remember.
I hope this is not another P.O. horror story in the making.
