Help! Questions about title?
I know I am new here but I love the GS bikes. I recently purchased an 82 GS 850 for 200.00 but was missing the title. The guy said he had the title but lost it before he put it in his name. What to do. I know my options are cutting the neck off and putting a new one on with a title. But I really am not feeling like that much work. And the legality. SOOO Does anyone have a title for sale with or without a frame. The bike was from Indiana and I have found out some info about how to get it, just not sure if it's worth it.Tags: None

I have used http://www.its-titles.com/dear15.htm successfully a couple of times now.

Where do you live? Depending on your state, there are various ways to legally get a new title.

I have used a service like that twice. You sign it over to them, they register it in Maine, a no title state for older vehicles, then sign it over to you. You receive a Maine plate and registration, which you can take to your local DMV.
If you know someone in Maine or New Hampshire they could probably help you out for less money.
Your state should recognize that an older vehicle from Maine or NH will not have a title. I had no trouble registering mine in AK.sigpic Too old, too many bikes, too many cars, too many things

You got a bill of sale right?? ITS will want a notarized B.O.S.to work with.
With a bill of sale the BMW should be able to give you the name and address of the last registered owner.. YOu might be able to track them down and get a release of interest..
Best thing to do is contact the BMV.. They will probably ask you to run a National Database search.. you can do that here

I do have a bill of sale but it was not notarized. I am still in touch with the owner so that should not be a problem. I tried to get the persons info on the title from the DMV but they will not give me any info per the Info Act BS. From what the say... I have not tried to just register it in my state with just the bill of sale, but I might try that.

Go to the DMV in YOUR OWN state and talk tell them the situation! Those people always get a bad rap but that's certainly the place to start. It's a very 'state specific' problem so nobody here is going to be able to solve your dilemma; (partly because nobody even knows what state you live in).1980 GS1100E, the latest of many.

Just make sure the bike is not stolen or has liens against it. If it's stolen there might be trouble, if a lien exists you might have to pay off the note before the title can be cleared,
It's not common but possible.
You got the bike for dirt cheap, pony up a few bucks for the title and you are still ahead of the game. I've paid 200 already for parts bikes.1981 GS650G , all the bike you need

The DMV website lists your options and it ain't pretty...it can be done, but not easily...

That is why I stay away from bikes with no title. Every guy on CL says "I don't have the title but it's easy to get one". Well dill-hole if it's so easy then you get it and I'll pay another $150 for the bike... Good luck but if the guy you got it from never transferred the title then he doesn't do you any good except to hopefully give you the name of the guy he bought it from and then you have to hope he wasn't lying about getting a title from that guy. Never tried the title search but you will have to have a notarized BOS to do much of anything and getting a BOS from the guy who never had it in his name is still useless. Good luck man, you're gonna need it.
