Sounds like a great plan and fun job (all be it a bit of hassle) Im rebuilding an 82 1100 ATM and its starting to look as though they engine may need replacing or at the very least total rebuild along with new crank, rotor, stator etc perhaps even new case. It makes me cry when I see how bikes PO (like mine) neglect their bikes or redneck engineer fixes. Good luck on the build and keep us posted -

I'm finding out more and more that is takes more of the latter than the former.
I'm going to have to look into that. Like you said, most of the purchases seem to be all the little things.
Exactly. Cosmetics are dead last on my list of things to do. Want to get this bike to be a reliable rider and then I can concentrate on making it look pretty.P.S. Your list looks pretty solid, similar to how I'm proceeding. I'd leave ALL the cosmetics for last, except stuff that can't be done with the engine installed.
Wow. That would make me cry as well if I had to do all of that. Good luck with your build. And I will keep everyone up to date with my progess.Sounds like a great plan and fun job (all be it a bit of hassle) I'm rebuilding an 82 1100 ATM and its starting to look as though they engine may need replacing or at the very least total rebuild along with new crank, rotor, stator etc perhaps even new case. Well thanks to all of you that replied. After receiving advice hear to take care of everything that needs takin' care of, I've continued to disassemble the frame. So far I've removed the handlebars and all of the brake calipers and master cylinders to inspect them. So far it looks like I'll need new handlebars (they are bent) which I guess is okay because it seems everyone hates the L bars. I'm also going to need new front brake calipers (rust has consumed them) and new rear brake caliper pistons. Just more stuff to add to my list. Thanks again to everyone.

My thought:
I would like to add that you should drop the oil pan and clean it out. It is listed in the manual as something to be done every 6k miles. I know when I pulled the pan off my '82 750 there was TONS of crud in there. And a lot of it got through to my oil pump and messed it up a bit. The pickup screen was partially plugged as well.Comment
