    GS 1000g Cam lobe rust

I have just bought a 1980 gs1000g that is in pieces. The engine is out but in one piece however the rocker cover was taken off for a while and the result was 4 cam lobes have rust on them with some pitting. I cleaned up some of the rust but not sure what to do about the light pitting.
Can anyone please help me with ideas about cleaning the rust and whether I should be concerned about light pitting. Thanks

Ride the crap out of it.
    Then change the oil.
    Repeat many times.

Life is too short to ride an L.

The shim and bucket GS valve train is bullet proof. I wouldn't worry too much although the cams are very durable so you should be able to find a decent set of used cams easily enough if you are nervous. If you get stuck drop me a PM since I have an extra sets you can have for cheap (other than the shipping cost).

Thanks for the replies so quickly.
I am glad you guys have the expertise!
I am not an expert mechanically but when the cams are not activating the valves does the back of the cam still touch the shim?

Also Nessism I had a look at the photos of the bikes in your list and they are unbelievable I cant believe the detail well done They must have taken some serious hours to complete.
Did you pwdercoat the frame on the gs1000s and what was the condition of the bike to start with?
          Thanks for the help.

No, the back of the cam lobes and the shims aren't touching when properly adjusted. This is the "valve clearance" that has been discussed ad nauseum on this site.

If you really are intent on reassmbling this bike, you absolutely need a shop manual for it.
