Bonanza Dave, thanks for your reply. I hadn't considered flipping it, because I was too fixated on the old screen and its design -- but it makes perfect sense. When I dry fitted the new screen with the crimps facing the sealing surface, the screen began to deform as the three socket-head cap screws were tightened . . .

It's still raining . . . I've got the new sump screen in, and the oil pan, with shiny cooling fins, is bolted on over a new gasket. The improved setup, experts agree, is good for 3 to 5 more horsepower . . . onto the cam chain tensioner and oil sending unit . . .
each had the kind of oil seepage you might expect from 32 years of service, and since the carburetors are off for a rebuild and rejet, easy to get to . . . just waiting for the new gaskets and O rings to arrive . . . and maybe for the rain to stop . . .
