Not a gs but will help me to get one.
My buddy has a honda, not quit sure of the year or model right yet. He says that if I can help him figure out his charging problem he would let me have his gs 650. I do know that he just replaced the generator and something else in it but it still wont charge. So I figured I would get with the geru's on here to see if you all had any suggestions as to what I should look for. I will get with him on the year and make. I know its an early 80's model and its water cooled.Tags: None -

Well its likely going to be the same issues as we face with the GSs so start with reviewing the Stator Papers. If the Stator checks out and the battery takes a load test ( you likely can have it tested at the autostore) then your likely looking at the R/R, wiring or even more likely, corroded connectors and or bad grounds.
There is tons of info on charging so do some reading and I'm sure it will come to you.
The flow chart for fault finding is excellent in the Stator Papers so follow along and you'll nail it and become a new 650 owner.
Let us know how it goes.
Cheers,

Not sure on what you have, a lot of the water cooled Honda's have the stator installed at the back of the motor.. Required motor removal to replace. Basicly same as the GS start by checking the stator outputComment

The tests on many of those Honda alternators mounted behind the motor are similar to those recorded in the stator papers but not the same. Some were even bike specific (Honda were blo*dy terrible at doing this and their designers needed shooting). If you find out what model it is I probably have the test procedure somewhere and can let you have it.79 GS1000S

yeah, I bet on the cx500 too, If he had a wing he'd know it. He should give you the Honda and keep the GS but I won't tell if you don't. As others have said the alternator being bad on a CX is not a fun project. Maybe it's external and they all get pretty similar trouble shooting. Find out for sure what it is and go find the owners forum for it for advice and how to's. Seriously if it is the alternator just go find a different bike, probably not worth fixing.Comment

yeah his is the kind where its in the rear of the motor. He just installed a new one so i'm hoping that it might be some bad connections lol.Comment

If its a CX500 it will definitely have a cooked stator. The way they were wired and the location virtually guarantees high temps and crispy-hard wiring. The later year ones and GL500's (and 650's) were improved in this area.Comment
