    550 igniter queries

After having issues starting my 550 I have traced the problem to the igniter box.

After testing as per manual resistances are all wrong.

Its part number 32900-43400 but after researching on the net it seems to be superseded by part no 32900-43402.

After researching on here it seems that only another 550 igniter will work on my bike so will any 16 valve 550 igniter work correctly or only specific ones? Also is the 43402 from a specific model/year and if so which one?

Any and all options/suggestions on replacement or repair will be gratefully received bearing in mind I can't afford a new one or a Dyna 2000.

There is a company in Australia called Carmo that repairs them and many others but the shipping and time delay to N.Ireland would be horrendous - but for anyone who's tempted here's a link.

    Thanks in advance.

That model ignitor has the spark advance built in so I don't think there are any alternate parts that will substitute. You might want to post a Wanted to Buy ad here in the classifieds and watch ebay for a used one. Sending for repair sounds like a bigger gamble to me.

      Thanks for that.

So do all 16v 550's use the same part number igniter? I take it they do but then what's the year the 43402 one is from

You might want to go to alpha-sports.com and look at the part numbers on the fishe.

          Thanks again.

Did what you suggested and now know that all 83 on igniters use the same part number which is superseded by the later number.

          Second-hand original here I come.

            Thanks in advance.

All my resistances were wrong as well but identical on two different units both of which work perfectly. It makes no sense I know

83-86 GS550 igniter boxes in the US are near impossible to come by.
i have worked on several of these bikes that had lack of fire and no other GS model box will work.
              also,
dyna does not offer a dynaS for these small diameter ignition plate bikes.
careful buying used boxes...salvage yards sell these without ever hearing the parted bike run.

yes they are extremely rare it took two years to find a spare for me.
and I only got it cos it was like 20 bucks a long with a full wiring harness.
One of the guys has shoehorned a dyna onto this engine but it left the "points cover" impossible to install.

                  a 700/750/1150 box will plug in...100%
but will not work for sure...been there.
a dynaS would work if the plate was smaller in diameter and an early mechanical advance unit was installed.
if someone made a correct size plate and mounted the dyna modules....it would be a nice/cheap fix compared to a new box from suzuki(if there even available)
an 1150 box is around 400.00 after tax so a 550 box should be similar in cost.

dis you use the the sam crak trigger pickup ass. as the 700/750/1150
im sure spr k advance would be different though.

no secrets in the crank triggers..just a diameter difference.
the 550/700/750 is a small diameter trigger plate.
the difference in the advance curve wouldn't be very noticeable at all if any.
                      oh well..........

What were your values like? Mine were in the region of 1950 going to open circuit when they are supposed to be 9-20.

The igniter box had been attached to the wiring loom but not the bike, it was upside down. I connected the battery up, tried to start the bike, thought to myself aha earths, went to reattach the box and had water pour out of it.

I know the components are bedded in some sort of epoxy and water mightn't harm them but there is now something rattling around inside.

So is the advance on the 16v and the 8v the same? or did the first 16v come with mechanical advance?

This looks like the option I might go for unless I can find a good second hand one locally. Making a plate to fit should be quite possible.

Oh and alpha sport's price is $489 so it would cost even more in the uk.

Had a quick look at the Dynatec website and discovered that there are two DynaS setups for the 550. 77-78 and 78-81.

I am assuming the later version is the one to go for, can anybody confirm this or give me reasons why not?

Thanks for all the input so far folks I was getting a bit fed up but now I can see a chink of light at the end of the tunnel, and that is all down to you lot!

Both of these use a mechanical spark advance. I believe your 550 has the advance built into the ignitor so the Dyna S won't work, but the Dyna 2000 might (although it's expensive).
