    Now I'm confused

Ok, in 1979 there was a GS550E and a GS550L. Some of my bike looks like the L, but the title says it's an E. How can I find out for sure (dept of motor vehicles here has been known to be wrong)

    honestly, it really doesn't matter.

in 79 the L model will say GS550L on the side cover, and it will have handle bars that are taller i believe.

The "L" had leading axle forks, pull back bars, a "teardrop" tank, a much more steeply tiered seat, a bigger rear fender with a big ol' tail light sticking up and some other minor cosmetic differences like the gauges and side panels. This was the "cruising for burgers" look back then. 8)
And on the seventh day, after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

The bike didn't come with side covers. I was wondering if a previous owner might have modified the E with part from an L, is that possible? is there anywhere on the engine (plate) that would give a definative answer? on the frame it says it's an E, but the tank and seat, etc look like an L?

Ok, thanks. According to the frams it's an E...maybe I'll call it an E/L??

If the frame says "E", then you have a GS550 EN. :-)
