    Coil question

Can anyone tell me what ohm rating is for an 81 GS550L?

    Thanks in advance.

If it's the same as the 77 gs550 then it's 30-40k on the primary(between plug wires) and 2-5 ohms (the leads to the coils) on the secondary.

Hey look Earl, I'm learning something.

The only thing I don't know is if the 77 is the same as an 81.

There isnt any difference between the coils on my points ignition 79 750 and the coils on my electronic ignition 85 1150, so I see no reason why there should be a difference between coil values on the 77 and 81 550.

I don't think you guys answered his question? :? Or did you? Satch said "2-5", but there are 2.2 and 3.3 ohm coils out there, right?
        My '79 GS1000's are 3.3 ohm.

Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

It was my understanding (possibly incorrect) that as long as the coils read between 2 and 5 ohms then they would suffice.

But seriously, I'm definitely not the expert.

My tech manuals state that any value between 2 and 5 ohms is considered servicable. If I had to guess, I would say the stock resistance for the 550 would likely be a 3 ohm coil.

I'm not an expert on this either, but many years ago when I replaced my stock coils with Dyna's, they asked me what ohm rating my stock coils were. I was'nt sure and they looked it up and said it was 3.3 for my bike. Their book also showed some other models use 2.2 ohm coils.
Dyna makes 2.2 and 3.3 and another higher rated coil (5.5?) Their cases are color coded to avoid confusion on what rating they are.
In this case the coils probably are 3.3, but I would find out for sure before installing.
