    Re: front sprocket on a '79 GS1000E.

    I see a new one on E-bay. For some reason I cannot remember, are'nt there 2 plates that mount to the sprocket with 3 screws? These plates help guide the chain. I don't want to take off my cover if one of you guys know.
    The seller says there are no holes to accept any screws but he claims the sprocket is for my bike and also 750's and 1100's. Thanks!
    And on the seventh day,after resting from all that he had done,God went for a ride on his GS!
    Upon seeing that it was good, he went out again on his ZX14! But just a little bit faster!

    Keith, I have the 79 750 and 85 1150 running and a back up 81 750 and 80 1100 engine. They all use the same front sprocket. None of them have plates in the sides of the front sprocket to act as chain guides. All require a spacer between the sprocket and engine. The spacer is removable. Some countershaft sprockets are flat on both sides and the spacer is used. Some aftermarket sprockets have the spacer thickness integral to the sprocket and they are mounted with the stock spacer removed.

      Could you be confusing the front drive sprocket in with the stock cam chain sprockets, some of which came with vibration/sound dampening rubber pieces attached with a plate at around that time (I believe from memory)..., just a thought.

        I have a 83 GS1100E (82 Katana 1100 engine) and it definitely has plates that goes on each side of the front sprocket that's attached with 3 screws. I currently have the sprocket cover off waiting for my new ones to arrive in the mail.

          Keith, I may be wrong, but from memory aren't those plates on the sprocket silencers? They're meant to quieten the chain noise?
          I know there are no plates on my sprocket, but I have seen them in the past.

            Yes indeed, those plates were put on to reduce noise. No functional purpose; can be removed with no noise increase audible to my ear at least. Saves a little bit of rotational weight, but thats perhaps a little too anal, I suppose. I've never seen an aftermarket sprocket that used these plates. BTW, you guys are aware that all of the Z-1/KZ900/KZ1000 countershaft sprockets will interchange up until the '80 KZ1000J and later units, right? Also GS1000/GS1100/GS750 of late '70s and early '80s. Even GS1150s I think. Ride smart, ride hard! In that order!

              Yep, all of those countershaft sprockets will interchange including the GS1150
              as will all of the rear sprockets between the GS bikes.

              I have no idea if a KZ rear sprocket would fit.

                The plates are there to hold rubber that acts as a sound deadener on the chain side links. They also act as a spacer. Aftermarket sprockets I have used have the holes to screw the plates onto.

                  Thanks for the replies ! The sprocket on E-bay did'nt have the screw holes, so it could'nt have worked unless I had a spacer. Glad I did'nt waste my money. Thanks for all the help! I appreciate it !

                    Yep, all of those countershaft sprockets will interchange including the GS1150
                    as will all of the rear sprockets between the GS bikes.
                    I have been told by someone who should know that the air-cooled GSXR front sprockets will also fit right on to the '82+ GS1100 motors. All the rest listed, as well, apparently. This makes it easier if anyone is looking to do a 530 or 520 conversion from the stock 630 size.

                        If you go to the sprocket area on www.kimpex.com you can download a list of all the bikes and their sprocket part numbers. Then you can cross reference back and forth with the Sprocket Specialists Part# to see what your bike matches between brands. You can use the Suzuki Part# to see what you match within the zook brand.
