i totally cleaned out my carbs and it ran great afterwards. but it only runs great if i have the choke on even if its warm. and it has a problem starting, so i have to push it to get it started. its a 1977 gs750. i think it just might be running lean but i dont know how to fix it. have any tips?

One of the first things I would check is the float levels. If they are really low you can get conditions where the bike is running really lean and will run better with the chock on.Originally posted by Jared Zonts

Mike (mdole) is right, the float level has a significant effect on mixture. For your bike, the float level should be set to 24-25 mm. Pilot fuel screw 1 turn out, airscrew 1 3/4 turns out. Synchronize the carbs at 2000 rpm at 22 inches of mercury. Those settings will produce a light brown to medium tan burn color on the spark plugs if you have stock exhaust and airbox/airfilter.

If the floats are adjusted correctly check the airbox/airfilter. Make sure it was put back on correctly and sealed up tight after the carb work. Also check the intake boots/seals. Some Gs's are real sensitive to this and will run very lean if air is bypassing the filter or you have intake boot/seal leaks.Comment

did you adjust the air screws at all when you cleaned them up? i hope you counted the turns for each screw when you removed them...if you didn't try setting the air screws (the ones on the sides of the carbs) at about 1-2 turns out....and see how it reacts.
my other 550 did not want to run off the choke because the air screws were open too much.
