    HELP! my speedo is pegged at 85 MPH ?!?

    first off: 1983 GS1100EZ with about 10k miles. It has the Jimmy Carter speedo with the pin at 85 MPH.

    i have searched and it seems the problems are speed's failing or being slow..... mine is pegged at 85. it slipped back down to 65 or so yesterday on a ride but it's back to 85 now.
    before i do some exploratory surgery does anyone know of a fix for this?

    if it's unfixable i have 2 possible options.... the guy i bought the bike from a few years ago took another GS1100 speedo and had it tweaked (somewhere?!) and they overlaid a sticker on the face that went up to 120 or 130 MPH. i have that in a box of spare parts, and it might work.
    i also have a pretty beat up, but complete, 1977 GS 750. Can i swap the speedo unit ok? i would think it should work, but before i make a mess any advice would be great.

    #1 choice would be to fix the current speedo if it's just some sillyness, but i'll do what i have to. oh, and it does seem that backing up starts to back the dial down..... but when i go forward it shoots right back up.

    OH! and for the record i was not going near 80 MPH (let alone more) when this happened so i didn't somehow jam it like that.

      I think you are out of luck on your speedo, it is a sealed unit (at least the ones I have seen) and there are NO parts available. Looking at the diagram on bike bandit I would say the GS 750 speedo would work It is worth a try

          The "EZ' is a 1982 model, and has an 85 mph speedo. The "83" models are "ED" and came with 140 mph speedo's. If you can find a set of instruments from an "83" model, they should bolt right on. Then you can go 140, instead of only 85

              kindof sounds like the spring for the needle broke, or possibly something is jamming the shaft for the needle.

                  83 model year of either the ED or ES bikes in both 750 and 1100cc. if you need bolt spacing measurements let me know mine is more accessable with the windjammer fairing on it than it was with factory headlamp cover.
