    Newbie with a problem

    Hello All, I should introduce myself before trying to get some info out of you all.

    35 year old male living in Chicago IL, just aquired my first GS, a '83 GS1100ES. I also have a '75 Honda CB550, '82 CB750F, '81 CB900F, '83 CB1100F, and a '77 Kawi KZ650.

    Like I say I just aquired this Suzi, it was one of those "it ran when it was parked" deals, I cleaned the carbs, shot a little Marvel Mystery oil down the jugs, hit the button and she fired right off. So I jumped on and down the alley I went. I got about a half a block and it just started spewing oil out of the breather at the top of the cam cover. So I push it back to the garage and the more I look into it the oil it was spewing was rather thinned out and had a gas smell to it.

    So has anybody had such a experience or got any ideas.

    I really appreciate the help!

          A combination of petcock and carb float failure....or a wrong setting on
          the petcock.

          The petcock operates on a vacuum.....it opens when the engine turns over. If the setting is left on PRIme, then the gas can flow at any time, but otherwise it will not flow unless the engine turns over.

          I suspect the bike was resting on the sidestand for a while, and after the gas got there the floats did not seat properly, so gas was able to run through the carbs and into the crankcase.

          With too much fluids in the crankcase, it simply went up with the oil and was blown out.

          Either way, you have gas mixed with the ooil, and it all must be drained, and a new filter installed.

          Check the petcock setting first...maybe that is all it will take to cure the fuel flow problem.

          Be glad you noticed it so quickly, or you might have lost the engine due to inadequate lubrication.

                      It sounds like we have similar taste in bikes. My first street bike was a 1980 CB750F. My second was (is) my 1983 GS1100E, but it was a tough choice at the time between the GS and the CB1100F. My buddy bought the CB so I went with the GS. Anyway, I'm another area GS rider along with Ryan and quite a few others. Take a look at what's already been suggested and you'll probably be okay. If not, keep asking questions. There is an unbelievable amount of knowledge on this site. We'll get you up and running. Hopefully we'll see you out on the road soon. Keep an eye on the GS Meetingplace forum for upcoming rides. We also have a group email list that we communicate through. We'll add you to the list if you'd like to see what we're up to.

                          I KNOW THIS ONE

                          CHECK YOUR FULE TAP , IS PROBABLY STUCK OPEN, AND THE PETROL IS JUST LEAKING STRAIT THROUGH THE CARBS INTO THE CYLINDER HEAD ,MY MATES GS 650G KATANA HAD SAME PROBLEM , HAD BEEN STANDING FOR AGES AND THE PETROL HAD CRISTALISED IN THE TAP , , HIS WAS A VACUME TAP . CHECK YOUR FUEL TAP CHANGE THE OIL AND YOU SHOULD BE GOOD TO GO ! 8)

                              Thanks for all the input guys, It makes allot of sense about the petcock being left on and filling the crankcase, as it does not have the stock vacumn petcock on it, just a on/off/reserve cheap aftermarket petcock. I won't have a chance to work on it until this weekend but I will let you know what I find out then.

                              It would be nice to meet up with the other GS owners in the Chicago area sometime and shoot the breeze a bit!
