I'm assuming that you have a lot of slop in the clutch cable and all of the parts are nice and loose. No binding. Did you put the springs on a tester, if so what did they measure at 1"? I think the lightest I have are 40, but I have some that are in the 70 range. You can also shim them to a point. I doubt your making enough power to really need one, but there is always the lock-up.

I always go back to the basics when there is a problem that seems unfixable.

1)clutch cable adjustment has to have some slack at the lever(1-3mm)
2)throw out arm on the clutch cover at the proper angle and no binding when cover is installed. (here is a common mis-installation)
3)sequence of fiber plates and steel plates starting with fiber alternating and ending with fiber.
4) are there wear grooves in the inner clutch hub restricting the whole pack from completely compressing?
5)are there grooves in the outer basket restricting the whole pack from the completely compressing?
6)springs free length and tension need to be above service limit. (I do not advise shimming these) EBC makes a great spring package.when in doubt get new ones they are cheap.(these wear out quickest of all parts in there)
7)all the parts need to be specific for make and model no mix matching!!
8/ all plates need to be thicker than service limits steel and fiber even if they are new, measure them again.
9) has slick 50 or dura lube ever been used?? I have had experience with owners ruining a wet clutch with these synthetic products. if this is the case it is going to get very expensive quickly.

Are you sure it's not the tire when it's cold :twisted:

I wouldn't use anything but oem Suzuki or FBG fiber's. Pony up at Schznit's for around 80 bucks for 9 fiber's for the GS1100. New springs too and you should be in good shape for a long time. Let them oil soak overnight too.

Due to the gear reduction in the tranny and rear wheel the clutch doesn't feel the torque until you get in a higher gear at load. The thinner the fiber's get also reduce's the springs static pressure some too. Also make sure you got the right number of plates and fiber's cause if not the pressure plate may make contact with the inner basket causing spin city.

On my GS's I can see the air gap looking in the hole. Normally there's a lot of gap but I could see where if you were off a plate that things would be real bad..

Mr. Gearheads,
I pulled the clutch this morning and found some problems.
I bought a digital caliper and did some measuring. The fibers were in spec but barely. The steels were all good. The springs were all junk.
Like a fool I took a Fleabay sellers word for these springs as they were advertised as V&H HD clutch springs. The best spring measured in at 37mm. The spec is 38.5mm.
I hit the steels with 400 grade sandpaper and cleaned them with brake cleaner. But the old fibers back in cause they were in spec (high end). Shimmed the springs to 40mm until the Barnett HD springs get here.
Took it for a ride and no slippage. Couldn't keep the front tire on the ground. I know you all have some high HP machines but this bike is really fun.

I am very interested in drag racing and hit the local track often. (Famoso)
I check in on you guys all the time just to suck in the info. Some day with all this info I've been storing I'll build a drag bike. (Money permitting)

I actually have two timeslips. Both 11 second can't remember the MPH. I'll dig them up. I had Kris V run it for me. He did a wheelie almost the whole time. I hit the floor laughing and it made my day. Had a sissy bar and highway pegs. People were calling the sissy bar a roll bar. It was a hoot.

Don't get me wrong but why buy cheap off E-bay? Crap the hi-perf springs are only 10 bucks or so new. Did you get a package deal? I agree on the stock plates and steels for the clutch and aftermarket springs. Works good for me. I apologize if I seem rude. You (Chef) are a nice guy and I'm not trying to offend you in any way. Oh and the dragging in the early morning is the oil not quite letting go yet. It goes away after it warms up. That's just a sign of good tight clutches.

I was going to recommend APE - but you've been there! Another good outfit is Pingel Enterprises - http://www.pingelonline.com/ - they have a lot of goodies for the GS's!
