would you buy rearset plates?

A friend of mine has a waterjet machine that he uses for small proto and limited-run production parts cut from plate.

Anyway, I was thinking of having him cut some rearset mounting plates for GS1000s out of 3/8" alloy or 3/16" steel plate.

Cheapest and easiest would be to cut and drill the two mounting holes for the stock peg bolts, and then leave the upward part of the "L" unfinished so that people can drill for the rearsets of their choice.

A little more useful would be to drill & tap for some version of GSXR rearset brackets so that it's more of a bolt-on setup. But then we'd all be locked into the same rearsets.

Any thoughts?

I figure I could get them made for around $50 per pair, shipped in the US if I order 10 sets. I'd have to pay the setup costs, otherwise they would be cheaper.

Do GS750s have the same peg mounting centers as GS1000s?

I think they are very similar. I dont have a 1000 to base it off of, but from pics of my pre80 750 vs pre80 1000 they look pretty much the same. I for sure would be interested in purchasing them!

yes i would be interested in some. I would like to see the side profile of them as well, would it be much work for him to remove material from areas that are defintly not needed?

Make 'em as universal as possible. Then you can cover numerous models. People can just adapt as necessary. I presume this wouldn't be hard to do - just a few extra holes. Make them fit a common and relatively inexpensive rear set and you're on a winner.

Once you've done that - SIGN ME UP, I'LL TAKE TWO SETS!

Problem is, I think all of the bikes listed above have different peg mounts.

I'll start looking at the Suzuki microfiches and see which ones are easiest to adapt to.

I would not buy a set. I'd make my own. around here $50.00 would buy enough material for 6-10 units including pegs,shifting and braking linkages, heim joints. complete. Not the time to do it all though! I have made plenty of modified peg/shiftiing positions
forward as well as rearward. it is very satisfying to design/engineer a part, create it, and enjoy it.

that is just me. I also wonder about comfort, leg length, cornering clearance, there are so many options.. better overall?? better for who?? functionality? Weld a mount plate to the frame or try to use a bolt on approach.

I like the idea of rear-sets, but my concern is losing the use of the passenger pegs....what good is a sharp-looking bike if you can't take the occasional hottie for a spin?8-[

$50 buys the material here, too, but not the time to cut them out. Yes, I've designed and built my own rearsets for other projects but sometimes simple is better.

I have welded plates to frames before, but my bike is so nice I don't want to make any permanent changes, and I think other people feel the same.

Yea, even the 82 and 83 GS1100Es are different. Gonna be hard to make a universal set without a kazillion unused holes in them

I just sent you a PM with what I have for documentation. Which is basically the scanned images below sitting on a measured 1/2" grid.








Keep in mind that I have helicoils in the aluminum mounting plates to strengthen the attachment of the ZX12R rear sets. You will have to set the counter sunk hole depths for what ever fasteners you use.

If you can't get the photo to print to actual size send me a pm with your email and I'll send you the actual files. I know on my home computer when I printed the actual files they were spot on match to the rear sets. You should be able to cut out the printed photo and trace on card board for quick check on bike and then on aluminum for final product. Good luck. I've seen some other on the GSR using GSXR rear sets with what looks like easier mounting plates to fabricate. These were a lot of work for my very accomplished machinist buddy.
