    New Parts advice?

    Hey I know some of you have used these exact parts before, so I thought I'd ask for some tips. First off, the bike is a '77 GS550.

    I ordered:

    Dyna-S DS3-1 Electronic Ignition

    Dyna 7mm Copper core plug wires

    I guess my main questions would be in regards to the ignition install/tune. Also, I have no reason to believe my coils are bad, but would anyone happen to know what my stock Ohm resistence should be? I was gonna get some Dyna green coils but the wallet (wife) said no. Thanks in advance for any tips guys.

    You will be OK with the stock coils until you convince the wife with flowers and candy. Stock coils work fine with a DYNA S. I am thinking 3 ohm for stock.

      Stock is 4.5 ohm. Should work fine with the new ignition. Just so you know, the wires do not come come out of the stock coils. You can install new NGK caps after snipping off a cm or so of lead but that's about it.

        You completely lost me here. Are you saying that in order to put aftermarket wires on I would need new coils? If so, my frustration level just skyrocketed.

          word on the street is that you can change the wires but it's a bit complicated. you have to dig out the old ones and use epoxy to glue in the new ones. i haven't done it but i've looked it over and am pretty sure it's possible.

            Yes the DYNA wires are a plug in set up. The best way is use the DYNA only and then buy a set of coils later. I have tried to get those stock wires out and it is a pain in the a$$. Getting them to stay in there is the next problem with all of the vibration and movement of the wires,eventually you start having electrical issues:shock:

              So many obscenities are running through my head now that I realize I paid $16 for plug wires which will now most likely collect dust. My other issue is that my plug wires DO need replaced. Two of the tips are FUBAR. Has anyone swapped plug wire tips and boots before, and if so, could a novice pull it off?

                Tips and boots should be as simple as cutting off a short piece of wire to get to a clean section of good wire.

                I did mine last year sniped off the wire back 1cm or so with sharp shears

                It looks like Suzuki put some sort of insulating glue-like substance but i just used di-electric grease and screwed the caps onto the freh section of wire.

                Worked fine for me

                  Dyna-S Installed

                  Hey I thought I'd post an update since my parts from Z-1 got here about four days early (my thanks to Jeff). I installed the Dyna step by step using the instructions. It was one of the easiest upgrades I have ever done. Within 15 minutes the old points were off and the new ingition was on.

                  Well like anyone when they get a new toy, I wanted to see how it worked. Then I remembered my battery was almost too dead to turn over the engine. Well I thought I'd try anyways and I saw a larger spark at the plugs than I ever saw with points even when the battery was at full charge. I haven't put my tank back on yet so I couldn't try and start it, but you can bet if my lunch break would have been longer I would be elbows deep in engine right now.

                  I also want to thank everyone for the advice, and I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions once I try to get her running again.
