Pods, 4-1, Jet kit: Should I do it?

I believe the answer would be yes, but the taper on dynojet needles is also different.

Yes...I just did it. Again. If you REMOVE the stock thick NYLON spacer from the needles, and use a couple of washers that equal about HALF the nylon spacers thickness, the way the needles are assembled in the slide, you effectively RAISE the needle up into the slide. This of course raises the taper in the needle jet, and reduces the amount of throttle needed to get to that taper when turning the throttle, thereby allowing more fuel flow, richening the needle circuit.

My bike is bone stock and I am using about HALF of the original nylon washer space to get the bike to run much better. I tried using only ONE washer before, much too rich. Last night whilst Steve was showing KParkFan the ins and outs of carb disassembly, I tinkered, and installed a second washer. Results in responce were astounding. It calmed the bike down from being "jumpy" when in the needles, but the power increase was still there. on my way home, i hit the 675 on ramp near Steve doing about 25, cos you have to make a decent turn to get on it right now with the construction. Before I hit the end of the ramp, I was turning 7.5K in 4th, with the speedo (85mph variety) pegged. I then shifted into 5th, and it just kept on pulling. Basicly, its a whole lotta much more better

EDIT: It just occurred to me why you were asking about this. YES you can shim the needles to gain richness in that circuit. Will it be enough for pods and a pipe? No, i feel quite certain in saying that you will need a DynoJet kit with adjustable needles for this.

If I get pods, are the intake boots the only thing that is going to hold the carbs/pods up?

That and the cables. I have plans to fabricate a mount to the spine of the bike, but haven't done it

They make an EXCELLENT bench for photo taking! Nice white box!

I am waiting on valves shims, and tank paint, and have not bolted them on yet. I already have a 4:1 set on there that are all messed up, so I will ballpark tune her with those before I through these on, as I do not want to mess up the chrome sooner than I have to.

My bike has not gotten a lot of love before me, so I'm creeping through what is an ever more expensive project. I'm nervous about even getting her on the road this season, as I'm not going to want to pay for a 6 mos of insurance for only a month (in Vermont, starting monday) of riding time. Once I de-dent the tank, paint the tank, side covers, tail plastic, and cam caps, reinstall the R&R, the stator, the battery, re-set the points timing, replace the offending valve shims (two have sub .001 clearance), sort out the bee's nest of wiring, and then decide what to do about the chain and sprockets, replace these essentially non-filtering Emgo Pods with K&Ns, then finally buy a carb manometer (don't know why, but I'm procrastinating on buying one) and sync the carbs, and then swap out main jets until I'm happy with the results, I think I'll get to putting the pipes on. That is, assuming that my new job allows me home enough to do that before the snow falls. I leave for SC this Monday. Phew....

Guess I needed to rant, heh.

You know........it may be a hillbilly/outlaw thing..but my grandpa (who rode the "gypsy tour" from Kentucky to Canada from 1934 until the late 1970s) always claimed that "green is no color for a two-wheeled machine". I'm not sure why, but the old timers, from my part of the country would never ride a 'green' bike!?

Now, as far as the carbs.....once I put the pods on the carbs...I also use very stout plastic tie-straps to brace them from the cross member on the frame (just above the carbs).

I really don't think you "need" to brace them (cause the intake boots are pretty stout themselves) but I thought, just as you did, that the weight of the carbs would/might pull down a little too much on the boots and cause an air leak. With large tie-straps (those thick plastic ones made so famous by electricians) I find that the carbs are as stable as if they were braced by steel brackets and all the weight is taken off the boots.

Oh yea....almost forgot: I have a header from a 1980 GS750 that I decided to paint with white ceramic paint. The header looks very cool...if a white header looks cool to you. I never did use it because I found another 4-2-1: however, I may choose to use it in the future; but I'll have to find some pipes to paint with the ceramic as well..

The ceramic really made a cool looking coat on the old ugly pipes. I don't know how well it would hold up with heat........but that is what ceramic is supposed to be good at.

So, I was pretty much joking about painting the pods and pipes, though now that you mention white pipes, I could see that being cool just like black pipes.

As for the green... The PO painted it "british racing" green. It is actually a lot darker than british racing green but it has sparkles in it! SPARKLES!!!

I'll get a pic up soon of it. I don't really like the color, but oh well.

Supporting the pods = good idea I think. I have brand new intake boots, but still wouldn't want the carbs dragging them down over time.

Green bikes, (and cars), are bad luck...
I won't own 'em, drive 'em or ride 'em....

I've been looking for a 2000-2002 Kawasaki ZRX and they are almost all green...
I'd pass up the greatest deal if it's green.....
