Tools for adjusting cams?

I will be putting in bigger cams in my GS1000 motor Im building up. I will be getting a set of falicon adjustable cam sprockets for them. Im looking for a complete cam degreeing kit since I dont have any of the tools and never did this before. Any reccomendations? I saw this kit on bikebandit for a reasonable price. Would this do the job?

Go to www.jegs.com & look for the 18 inch Moroso degree wheel. I know it is a little pricey for someone not using it all the time but, with the degree marks almost 1/4 inch apart, it is the BEST I've found & the ONLY one I'll use. It is WAY better than the 9 inch Vance & Hines wheel I learned with! After that you need one of APE's top dead center stops, a 1 inch range dial indicator, & a magnet base indicator holder. I have the V&H video Byron made back in the 80s that shows SPECIFICALLY how to do the procedure & it is a VERY good instructional video! Unfortunately, it is not available anymore & VERY hard to find for sale! You will need to make a pointer for the degree wheel & figure out a place to bolt a piece of steel to to mount the magnetic base at the top of the head. After that, it's just a matter of learning the procedure & doing it a few times. It isn't hard but you DO need the right parts & to pay attention to your math! Ray, we should rip that video (VHS I hope) to digital and put it on utube. A friend gave me an unopened VHS tape of the 199? NHRA races and I was going to try to rip it. If it comes out good, I will offer to rip yours if you don't have a way to do it. How is tank anyway? You two mend your differences?


I use a little 9" jobber. Works fine. I tripple check everything and would guess I am within a half degree when all said and done. Agree, bigger is better!! If you have the room, go bigger. If your really short on funds, there is a picture of a wheel that you can print off on a laser and glue it to some cardboard. I have done this before when I could not fit my 9" into a bike I was working on. I made a half moon looking one with cardboard, then tossed it out.

Mark, Tank is an ex-convict, tweaker that has a longer johnson that attention span. He got a set of Pro Stock Lectrons from Fred Camarena for a grand. Gave Fred $500.00 up front to try them & said would pay the rest if they worked ok. Don is RUNNING the carbs & won't pay Fred the other 500 he owes him. In MY book, that makes Don a THIEF! I have no respect for him as a human being. I respect his ability to ride but have ZERO respect for HIM! If you had to be around him for an entire day you would probably not care to be around him again too much either. As far as the V&H video goes, I have no idea what the copyright laws are on that stuff. If we can do it LEGALLY fine. If not, no because I respect Terry & Byron both as I used to work for them. Ray.

at www.aperaceparts.com you can get a degree wheel for $18.95 and a TDC piston stop for $22.75, and at www.harborfreight.com you can get a magnetic base $12.99 and a 1" dial indicator for $13.99. that gives you a grand total of $68.68. then of course you will have to add a little for shipping which you would have to add to the others also. A lot of people knock Harbor Freight, but for tools for a job you're only going to do a couple of times and don't want to make a huge investment... they seem to be good enough for me. I used them to degree mine and several friends cams, plus other random jobs.

Piston Stop

Instead of buying a piston stop you may consider making a piston stop out of a fouled NGK spark plug, like they did on Page 2. Pretty cheap and it does the job.

I got all the tools from a discount store around here except my sweet 8" degree wheel. and I made the positive stop out of an old spark plug and a long bolt.

magnetic base 12.00 dial indicater 30.00 degree wheel 24.99 positive stop, and metal base, pointer are home made.

it is easier than most think.

I would suggest that of all that you showed, the last one from Pit Stop Performance would be the best because he uses our degree wheel. Our wheel is designed in CAD, so the lines are exact.

While I agree with Jay in most things, I will guarantee if you use a 9 inch wheel first & then use the Moroso 18 inch wheel, you will NEVER want to use a 9 again! Degreeing cams is just WAY easier with the bigger wheel because the degree marks are almost 1/4 inch apart! It is just more precise. Ray.
