    Straightened My Crank

    My 1000 crank was measuring .0033" runout when indicating off the center bearings, spec is .002", so decided to give a go at straightening it.

    Found the high spot, removed the V-blocks under the bearings, supported the pork chop weights with some solid chunks of aluminum, and wailed on the center pork chops while protecting them with another chunk of aluminum.

    After it was all said and done runout on the center bearings shows .001" on one side and .0017" on the other. Good enough.

        Your part of a line of great motorcycle "machinists"

        A while back, in another thread, I mentioned that somewhere I had a photo of Pops hand filing a camshaft. I dug it out tonight and shot a photo, so you guys could see it. I wish he were still with us. I miss his goofy, shit-eating grin. JR

        P.S. I dont feel so bad about sanding my cam towers with 1000 grit now ; I'll admit it in public

          Can't see that photo of Pop's Jim, can you save it and post here?

          Got inspired to do the crank work after reading on an XS650 forum last night. Several guys pressing their own cranks apart/together so I figured a simple straightening job on my GS crank should be no sweat.

          Next project is to tackle that clutch hub! Going to grind those rivets off and see what can be done with the loose springs without spending a bunch of money.
