removing airbox lid

to what effect does removing the airbox lid have? Does it lean things out across all circuits? I've read here that this is a mod often done when leaving your stock airbox and adding a 4-1?

My stock airbox had a snorkel coming out of the lid. When I first got my bike I screwed around and cut just part of the snorkel off and it screwed up the jetting. Unless you're prepared to rejet leave the airbox alone.

You know I tried it on my '83 11ED and it didn't make much of a difference. Sounded cool but ran a little rough. It was with the stock exhaust though.
From the way Suzuki designed these bikes, it wasn't a valid mod for me.
