Can get a running example, complete, for $850.

Is it a decent donor bike for running gear, carbs etc., or is the upgrade in suspension not worth the trouble?

Sounds a little expensive for just the running gear when you consider only the front end & rear wheel would really be any sort of an upgrade, personally i'd wait for some later model slingshot stuff to come up at the right price

      Hi,
the forks are really short on that model.
      Even 800$CDN is too expensive.

It would be a good donor bike for a 550 but not at that price. Of course if it runs decent there's money to be made on the frame and engine.
