Bar center width?

OK, I've searched the forum, and I didn't find an answer to this, so here goes.
I have an 83 GS850L, with all the chrome, bad ergos, and slow handling that entails. so I was looking on JC Whitney site at what they have available, and looking at the specs, I'm confused.
The Super bike and Daytona bars seen to be what most people prefer, but they have center measurements of 4 inches and 4.4 inches respectively, whereas my clamps measure about 4 3/4 (4.75) inches outside to outside, leading me to believe they wouldn't fit, thereby limiting my choices to the Euro (lower than the super bike but with more pullback) or the GP Touring (slightly lower than Daytona with more pullback)
What gives here? is there something I'm missing about the center measurement, or are JC's measurements wrong?
I don't want to go through the same crap with bars as I've been going through with valve shims

Not 100% on the L but the Daytona's fit on a lot of stuff... I've seen them on 1000's, 850G's etc.

Be surprised if they didn't fit your bike

If so, are the Bikemaster? If yes what's your clamp spread outside to outside? I'm surprised I've only gotten one response, thought folks'd be all over this one.

had gp touring on my 82 xs400r (first bike) they were wonderful. i'd recommend those. jury is out on the daytona bars i could see if they fit my gs1100e in the morning as i have a new set waiting for me to weld the mounts onto the gsxr1100 triples i have on the kitchen table. anyways i think a lil more pullback is nice if your not constantly on the track

Track? are you talking about Daytonas or Superbike bars? Both have three inches of pullback, but the Daytona has a 5.36" rise, compared to 3.04" for Superbike.
Or that's how JC specs 'em out.
What was riding position like on your XS 400? My bike is an L model, with a stock bend that's got around seven inches rise and what looks like about 12 - 14 inches of pullback if I'm figuring right for grip length beyond the bar. it's not awfull, but it's not great, either. I's like some forward lean, like My old GN 400 had or maybe more

yikes.... sorry been awake for 20 hours now i oughta be goung to bed... i meant the superbike bars. thats what these were called i got them from ebay but they seem awful dragbaresque very little pullback.

979, I used the Bikemaster brand Daytona bend bars on my 81 & 82 and they fit fine. As I recall I originally tried the Euro bend but they did not have enough rise for the guages. The Daytonas are mighty comfy IMHO.

Daytona Bars

I've got the Daytona Bars on my 80 850G. Had Superbike and the GP Touring Bars but I like th Daytona Bars the best for day in day out riding. All three are Bikemaster.

would either of you mind measuring your clamps outside to outside, to see if they match the spread on my L model?
Also, how's the riding position? A little forward lean? I'm not looking for a sport bike crouch but a bit of a lean would be helpful for handling and comfort, I believe.
never mind measuring, I see twr's bikes are L's, so that's a load off. How about it on that lean, twr? any, or just straight up?

979, the bars can be rotated slightly to fine tune your riding position. I have them in a slightly forward position which sounds like what you are looking for.
