engine tick over

just got my gs550 going for the first time in years,i cleaned the carbs and put back on and after a few trys and some easy start spray,the engine started.it idles at about 2000rpm,but when i turn the idle screw to bring it down it takes ages for revs to come down(if it comes down at all)when i rev it ,it takes a while for the revs to come down aswell,changed the carb seals so it cant be that.
any ideas would be great

Vacuum leaks, or airbox leaks most likely.

Did you replace the o rings in the boots?

no mate,didnt replace o rings

If they are over thirty years old they need it.
