. i got a 1085 kit and it doesnt need a cooler, just keep an eye on the level and use decent oil

My 1100 survived 115+ last summer, sans oil cooler. Wasn't jetted for the pipe, either. Ran hot, but performance never changed.Comment

If it's being offered for free, take it.
15 row may be overkill, esp. if you don't plan on a thermostat that will effectively bypass the cooler till needed. Go with a GS1150 (GS1100EF to you) size one....pretty compact, and does the job just fine.Comment

oil cooler
thanks for replies must admit dont want to fit one
used to put Duckhams 20/50 oil in it but you cant buy it anymore been running it on
Castrol 15/40 high milage oil,it goes wellComment

you should be running 10/40 in a GS preferably synthetic or semi synthetic. 15/40 is way to heavy as the engines rely mainly on volume rather than pressure to lubricate the engine1978 GS1085.

North American market Castrol is crap - way low on zinc and phosphorus. Might be okay for a car that has multiple cats, but bad for a motorcycle that runs the oil though the transmission gears.
Regarding this so called "best engine builder...", he don't know squat if he says synthetic oil is bad. I can sort of understand if he says to not use synthetic right away after an engine rebuild, but proclaiming synthetic bad is nonsense.Ed
