    Removing US Restrictions

    Hi.

    I live in the UK and have an '82 GS450L which until '95 lived in the US. It annoys me that the speedo isn't stable after 55mph or so - does anyone know what Suzuki did so that it wouldn't register above 80mph (I believe this was a requirement). And more importantly, how whatever they did can be disabled?

    The rev-counter is a bit erratic too but that may just be a mechanical fault.

    Were the carbs under-sized/under-jetted for the US market? The bike was never sold in the UK so I have no comparison. And whilst on the subject, is there an alternative air filter that can be used? An oily bit of foam sandwiched between two plastic grids seems archaic!

    Also, just to the rear of the upper mounting of the right shocker there is a small plate which has two holes in it welded to the frame. Any idea what this is for?

    I think that'll do for the moment!

      If you are talking about the plate near the rear shock it is where the helmet lock is supposed to be. Mine is missing too and I have been looking for one. Let me know if you find one.

          No, as a matter of fact the UK requires restrictors to keep the HP/KW down i think 33 is the number, the GS500e requires them without the hp is 37. the only restrictive thing is some modles are jetted really lean for California.

              If it is a US bike then there should be no restrictors of any kind, The speedo does not limit the bike to 80mph, it will only read to 80mph

                  No, that's wrong.

                  From the Government agency website:

                  To gain a full standard category A licence you must successfully complete CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and pass a theory test followed by a practical test on a motorcycle of over 120cc but not larger than 125cc and capable of at least 100kph. In practice the normal test vehicle will be a 125cc machine. A full standard category A licence permits you ride any motorcycle with a power output of up to 25kW (33bhp) and a power-to-weight ratio not exceeding 0.16kW/kg without `L' plates, carry pillion passengers and use motorways. You are restricted to a motorcycle up to 25kW for two years (not counting any periods of disqualification). After two years you may ride any size motorcycle.

                      What about all the emission controls that were in place? I bet Suzuki had to make changes for those! I know the bike is only 450cc and is heavy compared to current bikes but it seems to me to be underpowered. Of course, without an accurate speedo I could be entirely mistaken!

                          There are no emission devices other that the breather hose on the cam cover that is connected to the air cleaner air box. Just very lean jetting. and a clean runnng engine for its time.
