hi i am working on a 79 gs1000 low mileage , wwas told i need to degree the cams ?? , does anyone know how or what i need to do , like to add some bottom end ,

You need to slot the cam chain sprocket bolt holes.

Oh, and the 1000G cams are already tuned for low end. Finding a set of those will save you some time.

Add a tooth or two to the rear sprocket. It's a lot easier than doing something like degreeing cams if you've never done it before.

But if you DO do it, either hire someone or do a lot of reading and have the necessary tools...

It is time consuming and a PITA. But, if done correctly, can maximize the powerband of any set of cams. Took me a lot of studying, reading, and effort. Plus, it did not help that I was sold a degree wheel that did not fit, although the vendor assured me it would fit my exact bike. Also, the markings on the wheel I purchased were different from all the writeups I found on the web, so I had to figure out the translation from the writeups to my circumstance.
I had no choice, I had the head milled so it changed the cam geometry. would I do it again? Sure, the first time is always the worst. Would I recommend anyone else learn how to do it for a stock engine. Not really, unless you just enjoy challenges.
