Stock paper filters do not filter any better than a properly oiled K&N. A K&N however will flow significantly better. But not only that, a paper filter costs you each time you replace it. K&N is cleanable over and over. I paid 37.00 shipped for it. Idk what a stock filter cost, but eventually you will be paying more in the end. How much is a stock paper filter anyway?'83 GS 1100T

Not trying to sway opinions either way, but you may want to read this:
Chevrolet / GMC Diesel Tech Articles - Duramax Air Filter Testing * - SCOPE: This report presents the results of an ISO 5011 test of several air filters designed for the GM Duramax Diesel. The test was independently performed under controlled conditions using a $285,000 machine at Testand Corp of Rhode Island...
Granted, it's a test on a diesel motor, but it's a pretty good test IMO.Comment

I saw some hot rod show do the same test (but with a big block gas engine). Accept the included one more aspect to their test subjects. A properly OILED K&N filter. Like the test you posted, they also tested a K&N right out of the box (no oil) and it failed miserably too. I was a certified automotive technician for over 8 years. I have performed dyno tests myself on vehicles with different intake setups. So I do claim to know a bit about it.
But for every test ever performed on and about anything you can think of there are many other tests on the same thing with opposite results. Just the way the world works.
So, in conclusion, I'll keep using them because I know they work. You may not use them because you have doubts. A paper filter is sufficient enough to protect your engine from dirt and grime.'83 GS 1100T

Looks like a very good test. I'm sold! Not trying to sway opinions either way, but you may want to read this:

For a daily rider, I want the best dirt protection, and lowest maintenance.
When I was racing, I went all out to win, so I used no filter.

In my experience, the K&N filters do flow more dirt. What sold me was the sunshine test. Oh, the stock filter is about 10 to 15 bucks, IIRC.Last edited by 1980GS1000E; 08-05-2012, 11:34 AM.Current Rides: 1980 Suzuki GS1000ET, 2006 H-D Fatboy, 2021 BMW K1600BComment

Ya had to jinx me on those carb boots! Lol. Had 2 rip overnight. Replaced them with a couple pretty firm boots from my parts bike and they leak. So! Guess I need to buy fresh boots. Grrrrrrrrrrr'83 GS 1100T

Hmmm, think i would find an air box and not leave air filter out like that. The air box was designed to help in the air delivery.Comment

Sold the air box. Didn't want it. Wanted the high flow of the K&N but did not like the pods.'83 GS 1100T

When a good gust of wind would hit from either side of me (while clipping along at 70+) I could feel the engine lean out. I do know that these carbs are not properly set up for the mods that are on the bike. As I stated above, I did not have any time to pull and build them correctly. Now I'm just trying to limp this 750 engine till the winter, when I start to tear it down and do EVERYthing the proper way. And that includes starting from scratch with the bone stock 1100 carbs I now have. Plus, I think the bike looks better with the intake box installed.
I sure wish we lived closer to each other, because last winter I would have handed you a fistful of cash and the keys to fix her right... Now I'm off the road and have more time than money.Last edited by Spyder; 08-05-2012, 07:33 PM.'83 GS 1100T

My '83 750 would lean out from a crosswind with the stock airbox on it, switched to pods because of it. It has never done it with pods.Comment

Superior to individual filters?
Actually, that looks like it should flow very good to me.
With a long air column for velocity, boosting torque, and the even air distribution to the carbs will make adjustments easy.

It really does work well. Runs a lot smoother, and stronger. I like it, and will stick with this setup.'83 GS 1100T
