Sheared starter clutch bolts

    Sheared starter clutch bolts

    Hi!
    A seller tells me that the started clutch bolts on his GS1150 are sheared.
    I can handle that but am wondering if this automatically means that the crankshaft tapered end might be knackered.
    Any insight would be appreciated!

    not necessarily, its one of those things that you wont really know until you get it apart

        The 1150's have a dowel that fits from the rotor to the clutch so it won't spin freely.

          I had sheared bolts on an 1100. The rotor was still secure and there was no damage to the taper...

            All of them (84 and later)? If that is the case, I will not worry about it.
            Note: Some 1983 GS1100Es have that dowel, some don't. .. thus the reason for my wondering about this issue.

                I sheared mine 3 times in one season.The crank end was a little gauled, but red loctite,some specific welding, and no more problems...

                  Mine came loose, but the dowel saved them shearing. I found the SC mounting surface on the rotor was dished and was 0.005" out of true. I machined it flat and used red Loctite to secure the bolts.

                  I also discovered that the bearing clearance on the crank end was excessive, causing the SC engaging surface to oscillate at idle. You could hear the SC lightly snatching, noticeably when the engine was cold. The overlap effect of the Yoshi Cams at idle, probably encourage the snatching too. I think that this is the main cause of SC bolts getting sheared on the 1150's.
