    Unweld/drill out 1150 HD clutch basket?

    Clutch basket is rattling bad at idle, wondering if a HD backing plate can be reused or redrilled with a new basket installed with ( I think I saw) Orient Express rivets or some such thing.

    I have two HD backing plates, but both show side to side movement on the rivets. One basket is cracked all the way to the roller bearing and the other has been welded on where the tangs engage by S&K Racing.
    GS\'s since 1982: 55OMZ, 550ES, 750ET, (2) 1100ET\'s, 1100S, 1150ES. Current ride is an 83 Katana. Wifes bike is an 84 GS 1150ES

    The welding heat treats the backing plates & they crack when re-welded. Ask me how I know! Ray.

      This is like a before and after experience situation...

      it is only a tough decision to try and save tired old parts before you find yourself picking up pieces of a 2 or 3 times failed part. After, well... it is a simple decision then.

      an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

        Ray;
        Do you do them yourself? Who makes your rivets?
