Question for Jay @ APE, heavy duty head studs/nuts for a 1978 GS1000E

    Jay,

I'm posting this question publicly because other people on the forum might be looking for the same parts:

I would like to purchase some heavy duty main bearing studs & nuts (I already purchased your heavy duty cylinder studs/nuts) for my 1978 GS1000E engine - I called Mike at APE and he said that you guys don't make them :-(

Rapidray (who has my head right now) suggested I send you one of the old studs and *maybe* you might be able to match it with something. What do you think?

Actually, what I said was that you would have to send ALL of them unless they are all the same length which I have NEVER seen on a Suzuki.

      I misspoke - that's what I meant, Ray...

Quite agree...look at the standard torque figures and ask yourself, why would you bother....

Jay is a nice guy & will help someone when he can. He has played match/no match for me a couple of times in the past. I paid a little extra but I appreciated his time & effort. When he has time, he goes a long way to help people. I wonder how different the 1000 main stud set is from the 16 valve 1100?

Sorry, but there is no such thing as main studs on a 78 GS1000E. Are you asking about HD case bolts or trying to convert from bolts to studs?

Using studs around the sections that clamp the main bearings - I was under the impression studs were made...

I'll make a long story short:

I compared the Suzuki parts fiches for a GS1000E to a GS1100 (z model crankcase)

ALL of the part #'s for the OE main bearing case bolts are the same EXCEPT for one - the good news is that the one exception is used on the 1100 but simply in a different position.

Where I'm going with this is that the studs are already made by APE - all they have to do is swap one for a shorter length.

I spoke to Mike at APE and I'm going to send him pictures of my existing bolts and he said it probably wouldn't be a problem to take an existing 1100 kit and swap out one stud.

                  Sweet!

                    GS1000Z?
                    whats that a katana?
a kat would be the same as an 80-83 1100 chain drive.

                        Progress:

Pics of the studs were sent to mike at APE last week and he is working on it - should have some info after the holiday.
