Need help: Problem with Bar End Mirror '79 GS425

So I have a bone stock 1979 GS 425. Bike runs great with only 6800 miles and I scored it for $250! The only thing that bothers me is the giant mirrors, so I had a package set of clubmans/grips/bar end mirrors (the type that insert inside the handlebars) lying around and tried ti install the mirrors last night. Now I have three problems.

So I removed the mirror from the bar end mount (insert) and placed it inside the handle bar end (on the throttle side). I tapped it in with a rubber mallet to seat it. Then I attached the mirror and tried to screw in the hex key bolt, but it won't tighten. It just spins in there. And, now the it's stuck in there! I can't remove it. Not only that, now my throttle wont snap back after I turn it, evidently the insert is jamming it up somehow. What did I do wrong? Anyone have this happen before? Are these not compatible with my bars? The package kit I have is 7/8" so I am not sure why it wouldn't fit.

I can post pics later but I am sure I explained it well enough. I am also pretty sure I can remove the throttle assembly and pry out the insert, but I really want this to work. My other option is to just use the clubmans it came with and replace the whole setup. Any help/advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Haha, ya, like I said I am sure I can remove it, but I want to know why it didn't work.

The only thing I can think of is that inner diameter of the stock bar is smaller than the clubmans that the mirrors came with. So, I actually forced the mirror into a diameter that was smaller than intended.

The secret to those things is this: Take the 3 piece bar insert and clamp it in a vice and squeeze it until it's a resistance fit in the bars. Tap it in with a dead blow or block of wood then tighten the mirror head onto it

Thanks! I think because I had this issue I am just going to swap in the whole clubman set. How many wires are running through the bars on a 425?
