1981 GS750 E with BS34 carbs and Kerker exhaust- Airbox modification or not

Because I didn't want to go with individual pods I ordered a K&N replacement filter like this:

I did this because I believe it is best to keep the original plenum chamber for best performance. My question is if I should dich the airfilter-chamber and mount the filter in open air or if I should make a larger hole where the two smaller holes are. If so, how large a hole? I believe it should be a bit bigger than the opening in between the plenumbox and the airfilter box. Anyone have any experience with this? I want to go with the solution that gives the best performance, but if there is a big downside otherwise in diching the airfilter box, I'll consider to keep it.

I would keep the filter housing my self, but you may be over carburating that little 750 with 34's, with a pipe and jet kit on the original 32's they run pretty strong
