Has anyone replace their points type ignition systems with an electronic versions? what would work on GS850gl?

Dyna S is the way to go..I'm not sure about the particular model for an 850 but i'd think it would be the same one needed on the 650 which is the DS3-2. It's easy to install and a major upgrade. You may want to wait until someone else chimes in on the specific model you would need but the ds3-2 dyna s ignition can be had for $115 brand new with factory warranty on ebay from a seller named ATVGalaxy.
