What do you think of this

It's a groove on the #4 rod eveything else looks good??

It's on a welded crank that I was going to buy and put the 1425 pistons on it. I thinking it's a weak area now most likely caused by galling.

Would you guy's still use this crank.

    Thanks Jake

    Questionable rod

Does this show up on any of the other rods? Does it look like it could be a machined groove to retain oil, the pins are pressed into the rods aren't they? So the rods are not set-up to float on the pistons are they?
It looks a little too 'clean' a mark to be a gall mark...what would or could have been even remotely near there to cause the mark?
Alot of questions I know, but you must ask these things to clarify things.
I am concerned that this groove can weaken the little end......don't know.

The other 3 rods are clean as a whisle. I'm thinking dirt or something like that.

Only $300 for it. I'll be giving it back tomorrow.

I got my eye on another one. If it doesn't look good then I'll just use mine and ship if off when I get the cases bored out.

I sold my good crank over the summer. I have 3 cranks left, If you wanted to send one out for a rebuild. It's way more expensive to rebuild, but then you know exactly what you have.

I have 2 cranks both out of a 1980 1100e. I also have a welded big left end crank from an 83. It has the helical gear. I got the welded one from richie last winter when I started stockpiling parts.

I think the crank is the most important part of your bike. If you break a crank it can take out the cases, pan, block, pistons, and the head.

This is on ebay. 750 straight cut gear. Not very pretty.

And also a fellow racer has a welded anhd balanced 1100 crank with helical gear and a welded basket. I don't know what he wants for it or how much use it has. I stopped by and he was just showing it to me. his e-mail is Wags3168@aol.com

I have learned from experience that a used crank is not the place to save money.

Stan Gardner at GRC is excellent and reasonable. He will not sell you something you do not need.
