engine swaps/exhaust
hey all.. wondering if there are any larger displacement GS engines that will bolt into the 78 GS550 frame. also, i have a 4 into 1 exhaust from a 76 honda CB550.... wondering if it's possible to plunk that into place instead of the 4 into 2 the suzuk has. i have heard of people using exhausts from other bikes before... wondering if there is any credibility in the stories. but a larger engine would be fun. mind you, i am not doing this because i need extra power, but because i would want more power. ha ha ha; some would say crazy, i say it's good times.Tags: None

Don't know about doing a engine swap on a 550. But a nitrous kit would shirley or surely wake it up.1166cc 1/8 ET 6.09@111.88

Re: engine swaps/exhaust
Buy a bigger bike, easier than wrenching. For what it would take to make a 550 run harder, you could get a 750 or 850, even an 1100. If you look at what some bikes are going for on eBay it might make more sense.Originally posted by shoggoth80hey all.. wondering if there are any larger displacement GS engines that will bolt into the 78 GS550 frame. also, i have a 4 into 1 exhaust from a 76 honda CB550.... wondering if it's possible to plunk that into place instead of the 4 into 2 the suzuk has. i have heard of people using exhausts from other bikes before... wondering if there is any credibility in the stories. but a larger engine would be fun. mind you, i am not doing this because i need extra power, but because i would want more power. ha ha ha; some would say crazy, i say it's good times.

The 550 frame is too small to really consider a swap to a bigger motor. Best bet is sell the 550 & buy yourself a 750 you would be way ahead in the long run

I've seen a GS550 with a ''slingshot'' oil-cooled GSXR750 motor, but as they don't come cheap it might be better to buy a complete old 1100 bike instead. If you're building a caf? racer, it's more about the fun than the power, right? Just put on some pods, DJ kit and a free flowing pipe and it'll do just fine.
Good luck, Marco.
