GS750E Rebuild Update

Update:

I went ahead and purchased the above exhaust and it really was in fine shape. I was in the area and picked it up from the guy who was very helpful helping me wrap it and load it in my truck.

I bought an exta pair of carbs as well since I'm new to workign o n hem and figured nothign hurts to have a spare set which also were great looking.

Anyway I am still looking to hear from the shop on my block and pistons they ordered for me...said lead time was about 10 days and given I said take your time I should hear something I figure by end fo this work week.

Project is moving right along and I am totally drooling to get this guy back together and on the road soon. stay tuned!

Note: since I have my old exhaust around I will likely be selling it for whatever I can recover for it so if someone is wanting keep your ear to this for when I make it available to you members first here before I try to get anything on ebay for it

Yet More News:

Contacted the shop and found out they are currently waiting to receive the last of the oversize pistons we ordered. Got them the engine number I have so they can order my replacement cams and the rest of my head components... I suppose it is a great thing the work tossed me a nice size Christmas bonus that I dropped right into more bike parts.... Ho Ho Ho

Heard from Sargent Cycle the other day as well and they have begun the work on recovering/re-foaming/repainting/etc. Apparently they are a bit behind but with things as they are and where we are with winter up here I still have plenty of time before I will need the seat.

Talked with the guy about cleaning up my carburetors and that stuff will be getting finished soon as well. Need to start measuring my old fuel lines to replace with clear ones.

Person who sold be the exhaust generously donated the harness off the parts bike at no charge. I was thanking him all the way up until I left for it too! ... When holiday stuff ends I will look at cleaning up my grounds and other wiring. In addition to testing my spare gauge cluster I picked up so hopefully the trip odometer is operating on this guy.

Gear indicator lights I'll have to look further into.... Gas tank Pingel Mode I will begin work on soon as well.

Follow-Up:

Got my block and pistons back from the machine shop so now I will soon begin the part of putting this beast back together... I can hardly wait to fire it up with all the new parts....

Now I definately need to find a torque wrence since I have yet to get one since I didn't need it for disassembly:-D

The shop I had doing the work for me seems to have taken an interest as well in my little project. Offering a checkup once I get all things completed. I told them i'd keep them posted8)

Help!!!

hey guys a friend from my car rally club generiously donated his torque wrench to me so I could start re-assembling my engine. My friend and I have all the surfaces prepped and we got my new piston rings in place.

We started putting the pistons pin in and it went in easy enough...issue is the piston pin covers the hole where the snap rings are supposed to go and when we back the pin out to put the clip in place we can't get the pin to go over it. We checked out the old pistons and pins and my new pins are like 10mm or so longer than my old ones I had in my stock pistons. given how things are being covered I am starting to think I might have gotten the wrong piston pins... can anyone clue me in on what my problem might be please. I was really hoping to get the head all torwued down today but this hitch has me stuck.

The block was rebored to .5mm btw

After recieving a comfirming opinion from a fellow GS'r (thanks dink) I visited the shop today and showed them my dilema. Apparently the pinstons I got were the wrong ones.. they comfirmed what I suspected about oversized pistons... the pistons increase in proportion to the oversized amount... I simply got ones meant for something other than .5mm.

Got them to re-order the correct ones and get faster shipping for free:-D so this weekend I will have the new correct pins and be able to get this beast ready to run...still waiting on my carbs

Still have my fuel tank pingel to install...I know I want to cut the screen shorter but I could use some advice on what I use to cut the screen and repare it after I'm done.

Anyone?...also I am assuming I cut the screen at where it attaches to the new petcock and not on the top

If you rebuilding an engine....

Darn piston rings got broken when I was tryign to not use a hose clamp like manual said to do...thoguht my friend and I could hand compress them... fat chance.... now I'm stuck waiting til monday to be able to get more ... and I have to wait at least a week before I'll see the replacements.... CRAP!!! I'm getting extras this time and using the hose clamps.... anyone takling this on their own... advice: Use the clamps!!!

Un believable.... the parts guy is saying they cannot get me anymore of the pistons rings everything shows discontinued... funny they got them for me a month ago but now they can't... WTF

12140-31311-050 is the number of the kit I need

ANYONE have this around I'd hate to have to buy another aftermarket set of pistons 'wiseco' to work with my OE parts... The mechanic that worked with me is off today and I'm praying [-o< that he can get me more of them somehow think other guy is just not wanting to call around and ask... because after all this money spent to lose to this is really total BS.....

That does sound like BS. Have you tried another Suzuki dealership with that number?

yup all the locals... the parts do show as discontinued but liek I said I got the four I go less than a month ago... I'm going to talk to the guy I orginally delt with given he was off today hoping he can do something for me else... I might just have to get the welco's ... if I would have forseen this being an issue I would have probably done that in the first place but I guess blind trust sometimes can turn to bite you like it has me.... lesson learned... my bike won't be idle forever I'll figure something out even if I have to switch over *shudder*.... I'll keep faith the original guy i delt with can work some magic for me[-o<

on a side note:

.....went out and rode my friends 550 last night even though it was really chilly through my jacket it felt good to be riding again....even if it was only 20 minutes:-| think I'll have to do more of that this week maybe even barrow it for commuting a few days since it is going to be sunny at least to the weekend.

yeah your right... and I was feelign guilty for the low 30's we are having right now :-D

I'm goign to wear my fleece pants and riding pants next time with better gloves... I'm sure I'll be toasty warm. Kind of wish we could have heating vests but we dont have the power allowance to run those goodies the goldwings have. I'll make due though...

When you slide the cylinder over the pistons two people are really better than one. Also with the hose clamps be careful because the bump on the clamp where the threads are will be pushed down first and angle the clamp and the rings will pop out. Get a proper ring compressor or mod the ones you have.
Do the inner two first. Remember you have to keep the pistons squared off to the cylinder and drop it evenly from the two sides. Once you get the cylinder to clear the rings to the top of the wrist pin hole of the piston rock the motor with a wrench on the stator rotor bolt until they slide in to the point where you feel confortable you won't undo all you work as you go with the outer two. This is also the time to feed the cam chain through and hang it on the frame or off to the side. When you clear the outer two rings rock the motor again and tap with a rubber mallet until the cylinder seats. I did this with my mentor last night and it went quite smoothly. But Jeff is really experienced with these machines.
While sliding the rings and pistons into the cylinders keep a flashlight handy and keep an eye on the rings because they will pop out and you'll need to reclamp them. Go slow and even you should be alright.

Why not put the pistons in the cylinders first....

Slide them in just enough to keep the rings in the bores, then just put all the pistons on all the rods at once? Slide the wrist pins in, job done. You still need a second person to hold the barrel, but there is not much chance of breaking any rings.

Wow... I did not see that referenced. I'm calling the shop back with this number once the guy I have delt with for this is back in; Thanks Chef that is some real good news to see after this tough month with other things that is such a pick me up thank you!

I'll post followup once I talk to my guy instead of some other random joe.
