How fast is is your old GS?

    On slight declines, I've maxed out the 85mph speedo on my GS450 a couple of times. The engine definitely has more - but on the 450 your a feather in a storm...

      77 GS750 with big bore pistons, advanced cams, k&n dual rc-2222's, & a 4 into 1 with performance baffle is all the bike I reasonably need... my buddies' ZRX1200's just barely pull away from me at excessive speeds. The bike pulls hard 6000rpm+ even from 110mph... on a racetrack, yeah....of course...

        I've done that with my TU250X too!!! but it goes to 90

          Back in 1990 or 91 when I was young and dumb and full of, well, bubble gum, I had my GS850G up to 140 on interstate 25. I had the peg on the speedo that stopped it at 85, but my buddy riding with me on an older honda CB750 said we were at 140. I can't remember what the tach said, redline or not, but it was still pulling. No fairing and I was about blown off. Speed could have been exaggerated, but it was damn fast! Is that even possible on a stock 850?
          I also remember the 15 mile trip to the town just north of here took only about five minutes!

              The biggest number I've seen on my speedo was 120 kph, which is roughly 74 mph. I have to try that late shifting though that is described in an another thread...

                I don't think so. Also not on a CB750. Maybe 125.

                      12,800 on tach in 5 th gear 401 , Open RC header, (sounds NICE) Smoothbores bore kit cams springs valves welded crank oil pump mods welded clutch ,good cam chain tensioner mods, lapped cam bores, Im 240 pounds plus, My 145 pound friend rode it and it power wheelies in 5 th gear, wish I was skinnier, !!

                          My 77 750 with a Yosh top end, everything, cams, pistons, porting, gerex ignition, Andrews coils, Barnett clutch. 10.98/126mph 1/4 on conti tires, 138 (radar verified) top end At B.I.R. when it was roadraced. NEVER a power wheelie in 5th and my skinny ass back then was about 140. And a Honda 750 goes 140...Oh and that's what the CBX guy said too. That was the easiest $50 I ever made.

                            Ok, my bubble is bursted I'll tell you, as a kid going from a Honda Rebel 250 to that GS 850 I felt like I was breaking the sound barrier.
                            I once pushed my bone stock 550 (no fairing, nothing done to the engine) to 180 km/h, which translates to 111mph. I hid behind the instruments, really lying down on the machine and f$!k was that three-lane highway becoming narrower which each digit on the speedo. I experienced 200 km/h only a few times so far, that was in a relatively modern car (90s). One really noticed the speed, and I was even slightly intimidated.

                            140kph (~222km/h) hence do not sound too outlandish for me from a technical point of view, but of course nooby me has no idea how much more power the 850 brings to table compared to the 550 – I mean, as well known, air resistance increases quadratically.

                            But would you've been able to hold on?

                              You guys are making me want to go home and find out what the ol' girl will do. lol
                              Ive hit 90mph a few of times and it get there really fast. Its seems a little silly that I replaced my 82 gauges with 83 so I could have a speedometer that will read more than 85mph and yet I seldom ever push it past 85....

                                Since the stock 850G has the rider pretty well upright I remember starting to lift off of the seat, holding tight with my knees to the tank. Zipping by cars like they were parked. Whatever the speed it was more of a rush than skydiving. If there's nothing around you there's no sensation of how fast you are traveling, just wind.
