final drive wear?

getting my rear wheel prepped for paint, removed the rear brake disc aswell as the final drive and on the inside its this red coloured metal flakes that when i wipe it kinda just turns into some sort of grease, its pretty dang dry in there but i cant see where this metal like dust came from. im just wondering is this something i should look into or grease up and leave alone?

Yah, do learn about that hub/spline in the rear wheel (especailly an 82). IT can wear (not so much the splines on the final drive).
Need to learn about the wear pattern, because can not see the area it wear when the hub is in the wheel.

Here is a worn one (82 as matter of fact) (close to complete failure) compared to a new (current) one.
Notice that the wear area is not the full width of the spline. THe portion of the spline that is not worn is the portion that you see when the hub is still in the wheel.
THe best way to inspect the hub is to remove it from the wheel.
But if you understand about the wear area, maybe you can get a good light in there and feel around with a small screw driver ot piece of stiff wire or something.

Are other posting, many, that describe how-why it wears, and how the current replacements are redesigned (different materail) and are still available (still used on more recent models).
And lots of post about Best to Lube with moly paste, the 50-60%, not the axle grease with 1 - 2 -3% moly.

But to answer your question: Yes, it can wear.... the hub in rear wheel (not the final drive itself), and is replaceable.
Is called "joint assembly" on parts microfische.

Ya I would be concerned. Here is my 82 GS1100GL drive. Same part 64680-45113 $179 through Partzilla. I found one for $129 in Israel of all places. In fact I have ordered a few parts from Israel at good prices. I ended up buying two spare rear drives(final drive) also since those gears are no longer available

You really need to keep those lubricated with moly paste. I use a Honda Moly Paste. You need to pull it off your wheel to see that pattern. A quick look and you could be fooled.

Yes that is an option. I was looking on Ebay but couldn't tell exactly how much wear there was by the photo so opted not to take the chance. I did however buy two very good condition final drives for $15.

The early, good, splines were black. Be careful though, the first version from the 850 was recalled because the studs, which hold the unit into the wheel, secured to the spline with nuts. On later units the threads were built into the spline. I think the first ones can be used, but you have to be careful to properly secure the studs. Rusty_Bronco bought one of the early ones and secured the studs properly. I just can't remember how he did it.
